![]() Croquet |
Croquet is a sport in which players use mallets to hit wooden or plastic balls through hoops, or wickets, embedded in a playing field. Though there are several variations of the game, in general, two forms are recognized: Association (or Six-Wicket) Croquet and Golf Croquet. Other popular variants include backyard croquet, mondo croquet, eXtreme croquet, and bicycle croquet. Croquet is believed to have originated in Ireland in the early 1800s as a distant cousin to golf. In the mid-1800s it was a popular pastime of the English aristocracy. Association
Croquet is the most commonly played version in countries other than the
US and Canada, and is the form most often played in international
competitions. Golf Croquet is the simplest form and the fastest growing
in popularity. Playing croquet well calls for the kind of physical skills developed in billiards and golf and the tactical thinking of board games like chess. Although the rules are simple enough, as are the rules of chess, mastering the tactics and strategy require, for most people, diligent practice and study.
